Russell has been a supporter of people power over the years and has been involved with promoting awareness of Thurrock Mind and South Essex Rape and Incest Crisis Centre (SERICC).
As a lad, Russell studied at Grays School (now Hathaway Academy) and Little Thurrock Primary.
